At over 8400 feet, Crane Mountain is the highest point in Lake County Oregon. At this elevation, opportunities abound for full 360 degree panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Along the eight-mile trail, terrains range from rugged rock to easy flat areas, and opportunities for all riding experience levels are available. The high desert forest and sagebrush lands provide a breathtaking and relaxing experience, making Crane Mountain an appealing place to ride and relax.

Crane Mountain National Recreation Trail #161: This trail, located east of Lakeview, Oregon, is 36 miles in length. It connects into the Fremont National Recreation Trail at the South Fork Crooked Creek Trailhead. The Crane Mountain Trail offers many scenic vistas and diverse environments as it traverses the slopes and summit of rugged Crane Mountain, the highest point in Lake County at 8,357 feet above sea level. Seasonal wildflowers are very abundant in July. The trail is open to hikers, pack stock, and mountain bikes for its whole length and motorized use is permitted on the 8 mile segment from Crane Mtn. peak to the Oregon/California state line. It is from moderate to most difficult with steep grades and rugged terrain. Note: The higher elevations of this trail are usually not snow free until July.

Getting There:

Go 2½ miles north on Highway 395, and turn right on Highway 140. Take Highway 140 east for 8 miles, then turn right on Forest Road 3615. Go ½ mile and turn right on old highway 140. Continue west for 1.4 miles then turn left onto Forest Road 3915. Go on Forest Road 3915 for 9 miles and turn right on Forest Road 4011. Go on Forest Road 4011 for 2½ miles. Turn left onto the 012 road and go for about ¼ mile to the parking area. The 4011 road, past the turn off to the trailhead, goes to the top of Crane Mountain. If you choose to drive to the top of Crane Mt., the road is very rough and steep, a 4x4 vehicle is recommended.
